How to Keep Student Desk Name Plates on the Desk All School Year

We've all seen it — you put a brand-new name tag on your student's desk, and within a week they have picked, picked, picked it away. So how do you keep those student name plates on the desks?

Here are some tips from the teachers on the Teach Starter team!

1. Place the name tag on the front of the desk, using clear tape. This ensures the plate is visible from the front of the room (helpful for that relief teacher!), but kids can't get their fingers on them!
2. Use hook and loop dots. This makes it easy to remove the name tags when you move students around, and if they pull it off, it can be easily placed back on the desk!
3. Reward students for neat name tags. Sometimes all it takes is a little reward-based motivation!
4. Use magnets for the desk plates. Similar to the hook and loop option, this also allows for easy removal and replacement.
5. Add more tape tape. If you use clear tape to adhere the name plates to the student desks, simply adding another layer when they start to be peeled can fix the issue quickly.
6. Provide fidget alternatives. For students who simply need to occupy their hands, providing fidget toys that can be used during the school day can help keep those name plates pristine.

How to Create Custom Desk Name Plates for Your Students

1. On the main resource page, select the "Customise" option (the dark green button). You will be taken into our digital studio.
2. If you've previously saved your class list of names, select this from the drop-down menu. Alternatively, you can easily add them at this step (remember to separate them each with a comma) and click 'Save List' to retain your class list for future resource customisations during the year (this will come in as a handy timesaver!).
3. Choose your preferred/required school font. This will be used for the alphabet, number line and your students' names.
4. Choose the style of the font lines you'd like your desk name plates to show.
5. In the Number Line field, you can select the range of numbers you'd like to display (1-10, 1-20, or 1-30).
6. Choose whether to display the Left and Right hands on your desk name plates by toggling the selection 'on' or 'off.'

That's it! Now you're ready to download and print your brand-new, customised desk name plates for your students!

Hit the download button, and save your PDF file somewhere safe. Next, print them off — they will automatically print two-to-a-page for ideal sizing on a school desk.
