Hanging Bulletin Board Letters — Teacher Tips

Getting new boards prepped? Our teacher team has some must-read tips for hanging your bulletin board letters this school year, plus ideas for easily storing them too.

1. Keep Colour Contrast in Mind — Choose colours that provide a good contrast and make the text visible to ensure the letters stand out from the background of the bulletin board. For instance, black or dark-coloured letters are best on light-coloured backgrounds, or vice versa.
2. Stick to the Theme — Before you hit print on a letter set, consider the overall theme or purpose of the bulletin board. You'll want to select letters that complement the theme and create a cohesive visual aesthetic. For example, if the bulletin board focuses on a specific season, you might choose letters in colours associated with that season.
3. Use a Level — You'd probably use a level before hanging a picture frame at home, so why not bring this tool into the classroom? A level can help you keep your letters, well ... you know!
4. Hang From the Centre — Laying out a long string of letters? Start with the letter or letters that will go right in the centre of your word or saying, then build out. This will help you ensure you have enough space on either side and don't run out of room on the board the way your students often run out of room on a line while writing!
5. Attach Your Letters With Reuse in Mind— Whether you're attaching your bulletin board letters with a stapler, glue dots, adhesive strips or something else, remember what you want to do with the letters when you are done with the board. Do you plan to store the letters to reuse next school year? Staples can often be pulled out with a staple remover (and if you have dark letters, you can colour over the staple with a marker to hide them!) to make the letters easier to reuse. Glue dots, on the other hand, can be tough to remove.
6. Store Used Bulletin Board Letters in Gallon Zipper Bags — Plan to reuse your letters? Slip them all into a gallon zipper bag, and label it with what the board said! This will make it much easier to sort through your collection of bags next school year to find the right one.
