When Is Father's Day 2024 in Australia?
Mark your calendars!
In Australia, Father's Day is traditionally celebrated on the first Sunday of September every year. In 2024, it will be held on Sunday, 1 September.
Why Is Father's Day Different in Australia?
Australia's Father's Day comes from the United States, where the day has been a special holiday in June since 1910. So why do we celebrate in September? It comes down to our seasons.
June is a summer month in the northern hemisphere, but it would be winter here in Australia. Honouring Dad, Pop and other special father figures in kids' lives in September allows you to mark the occasion on a (hopefully) warmer spring day.
Fun Father's Day Activities for the Primary Classroom
Now that it's on your calendar, what can you actually do with your students this Father's Day?
We've filled this collection with our teacher team's favourite activities and crafts, but we didn't stop there! Here are a few more to add to your list!
- Use small paper plates to make Dad badges. Students can practise writing their superlatives to award Dad or a special someone a badge!
- Challenge students to create their own superheroes for Father's Day. Whether they have a dad at home, live with grandparents or in a foster home or live with a single mum, allow students to take the lead in drawing who they consider a superhero on Father's Day. Don't forget to print Teach Starter's "make your own superhero template!"
- Let students get crafty with coloured pens on plastic that you can shrink in the oven. Make a small hole, add a keychain, and this activity is a perfect take-home for your students to give to Dad!
