Explore 2D shapes in the environment using this set of 8 display posters showing the shapes and everyday examples.
🟡 🟪 2D Shapes in the Environment Poster Pack🔺🔶
Learning about 2D shapes is an essential step for further mathematical concepts and is a crucial component of early childhood education. The ability to recognise 2D shapes and their features is an important foundational skill for the mathematical concepts of:
- Geometry (Space strand as described in the Australian Curriculum)
- Problem Solving
- Patterns
Use these posters to increase field knowledge at the beginning of your 2D shapes learning journey. Examine the features of each 2D shape and discuss the pictures to check for understanding that students can identify the 2D shapes in everyday places.
Display posters at eye level to use as a reference in future lessons.
How to Make the Most of Your 2D Shapes Poster
- Print the poster on A3 paper and display it in your classroom for students to reference when doing independent work.
- Print the poster on A4 paper, slip it into a clear sleeve, and use it in your guided groups as a reminder.
- Print the poster on A4 paper, slide it into a clear sleeve, and hang it on a ring as a reference tool for a resource centre.
We’ve also come up with bonus ways to turn posters into interactive tools that really make your lessons stick! Download the editable version in Google Slides and:
📝 Create a fill-in-the-blank worksheet by removing the photographs and asking students to draw items they know include the shapes listed.
📂 Print 6-to-a-page and place copies in students’ homework folders for reference.
💻 Provide posters as digital resources for virtual students or those on extended absences.
🧠 Test students’ memories by showing them the poster, then hiding it and having them tell you what they remember.
✅ Incorporate posters into your lesson wrap-up: students write on a sticky note what they learned from the lesson and place it on the poster.
