This 18-slide deck supports teacher instruction to help enable students to identify similarities and differences between 2-D shapes.
🟡 🟪 2D Shapes Similarities and Differences Teaching Presentation🔺🔶
Teach your students the names and features of eight different 2D shapes! This colourful and engaging digital activity will build students’ knowledge of 2D shapes, and have them compare the properties of each shape with another.
The presentation:
- Explains what shape properties are
- Introduces each 2D shape and identifies its properties
- Includes additional shape facts to help students remember the shape names and differences, and
- Prompts students to compare four sets of two 2D shapes using a simple table.
Display this Interactive Activity on your smartboard in Presenter View. Review the shape page and discuss the 2D shape’s features before moving on to the consolidation page, which requires students to compare and contrast shape sets.
Through this activity, students will show that they can recognise 2D shapes, and are able to identify the similarities and differences between shapes.
Tips for Differentiation + Scaffolding
A team of dedicated, experienced educators created this resource to support your Maths lessons.
In addition to individual student work time, use this activity to enhance learning through guided Maths groups, whole class lessons, or remote learning assignments.
If you have a mixture of above and below-level learners, we have a few suggestions for keeping students on track with these concepts:
🆘 Support Struggling Students
Provide 2D shape maths objects for students to touch and explore in order to help them better understand the similarities and differences.
Using a large piece of elastic tied together at the end have groups of students use their bodies to physically create the shapes. They might do this by standing inside the elastic or using their hands/feet to create the corners. You could turn this into a game – the first group to create the shape called out by the teacher earns a point.
➕ Challenge Fast Finishers
Have students find examples of objects in the classroom that have 2D shapes on the faces, draw and label them.
Once students have identified the shapes in the image on the last slide, have them create pictures by either drawing the shapes or tracing the shapes provided.Students could colour the same shapes each a particular colour e.g. all the triangles red.
🧑🏫 Group Learning
Project the slides onto a screen and work through them as a class by having students record their answers in their notebooks or mini whiteboards.
