Match 3D Shapes to Their Nets

3D nets are a flattened-out version of a 3D shape that can be cut out, folded and adhered together to create a model of that particular 3D shape. Visualising what a 3D shape will look like in its net form can be a tricky skill for some students to master… that’s where we come in!

This differentiated worksheet enables students to practise identifying and naming common three-dimensional objects. Students are also required to identify the 2D shapes that make up the 3D object, then identify the correct net from a choice of three options.

The easier version of the worksheet includes additional scaffolding for students. The more complex version has no scaffolding and also includes a challenge activity.

Answer sheets for both worksheets are also provided in the download.

Tips for Scaffolding and Extension

We’ve tried to help you cater to the diverse range of learning needs in your classroom by providing two differentiated versions of this 3D objects and their nets worksheet. However, if you’re looking for further ideas to support your less-confident students and extend your high fliers, here are some additional ideas:

  • Support Your Less-Confident Students – Some students may require hands-on materials (such as model 3D objects) to answer the questions. Alternatively, provide paper, pencils, rulers and scissors so that students can draw, cut out and test various nets to help them answer the questions. This may take extra time, but will be worth it for those students who can use these concrete representations to help them arrive at the correct answer!
  • Challenge and Extend Your High Fliers – Encourage lateral thinking by encouraging students to draw alternative nets for the 3D objects on the worksheet. There can be multiple net arrangements for each 3D object!

Teaching 3D Nets Has Never Been So Easy!

Use the dropdown menu next to the Download button to choose between the editable Google Slides or the easy-print PDF version of this resource.

As the download includes answer sheets, we recommend printing one copy of the entire file, then removing the worksheets for photocopying.
