Teaching Map Skills + Back to School Activity?

Resources for teaching map skills are abundant, but teachers often find it difficult to find engaging and exciting materials for primary school students. Many fun projects and mapping activities are reserved for the older kids, but we’ve put together a resource to change that! Why not include it in your first week of school activities during back-to-school madness?

This project-based activity will surely engage your young cartographers while building their knowledge of map skills and map keys. With this resource, students will cut out and use templates to build a birds-eye view map of their classroom.

This resource download includes:

  • blank classroom map grid
  • furniture and fixture templates
  • map key cutout
  • full-colour example for reference.

Through this activity, students will show the ability to make and use a map key.

Tips for Differentiation + Scaffolding

If you have a mixture of above- and below-level learners, check out these suggestions for keeping students on track with the concepts:

🆘 Support Struggling Students

Help students complete the activity by cutting out the tracing templates prior to completing the activity.

➕ Challenge Fast Finishers

Challenge your fast finishers to expand their mapping skills by mapping larger areas, such as their school, playground, or home.
