Read & Learn About the Commemoration of Remembrance Day

Teaching the history and traditions of Remembrance Day has the power to inspire empathy, respect, and a sense of national pride in our students. While the concept can be challenging to teach to primary school students, levelled and differentiated reading passages offer a unique window into the past and can help students at all levels explore the topic in depth.

What Do Poppies Represent? Reading Comprehension for Year 5

To help your students learn more about the history of Remembrance Day and the red poppy, we’re proud to introduce our latest educational resource – a set of differentiated reading comprehension worksheets focused on the history behind the relationship between the two.

This resource consists of a single, on-grade-level reading passage and a grouping of three differentiated reading comprehension worksheets. Each worksheet is discreetly marked with a series of stars (3 stars = Above, 2 Stars = On, 1 Star = Below) so that all students can access the material without noticing obvious differences in their assignments.

Students will read the passage independently or with a partner and reflect on and analyse the content. From there, they will answer various questions, including multiple-choice, open-ended, and constructed responses.

We have also included answer keys for easy grading!
