Identify triggers for challenging student behaviour by tracking incidents over time using an ABC Behaviour Chart.
What is An ABC Behaviour Chart? A Quick Refresh
The ABC recording method of data collection refers to the behavioural analysis technique of ‘Antecedent-Behaviour-Consequence’. This approach was developed by B.F Skinner, a renowned psychologist.
An ABC Behaviour Chart is a tool used to gather information about a student’s behaviour. ABC stands for Antecedent, Behaviour, and Consequence. The chart helps identify what happens before (Antecedent), during (Behaviour), and after (Consequence) a behaviour occurs. Using this method of behaviour record-keeping is extremely useful in understanding why a student might exhibit challenging behaviours since it provides a place to track specific behavioural incidents over time. Many teachers and behaviour interventionists often use this approach to identify triggers for behaviours and develop strategies for intervention and support.
Track Behaviour Triggers with an Antecedent – Behaviour – Consequence Chart
This printable template is the perfect tool to use when trying to identify what triggers a student’s challenging behaviours. Over time, tracking what happens before, during, and after a behavioural incident will help you determine what triggers the student may have and help you develop new strategies or interventions to prevent those behaviours from reoccurring.
