Get Your Students to Add Fractions with Like Denominators

Get ready to take your students on an exciting journey through outer space with this interactive maze based around adding fractions with like denominators!

This fun and challenging digital maze activity set has been designed by our passionate teacher team to allow your students to practise adding fractions with like denominators. Students are led through the maze by Numen Fraction, a space explorer in search of new planets. Students take on the role of Numen’s navigator. The maze consists of 20 different intersections (questions) that require them to solve an addition equation involving fractions with like denominators. Each intersection provides three new potential routes that the students can follow; however, only the correct answer will lead them forward in the maze! The incorrect answers lead to asteroid fields, unfamiliar moons and planets, and even supernovas!

The questions in the maze are presented in a number of different ways. This helps familiarise students with the different strategies that can be used to solve such equations. These include:

  • Number lines
  • Fraction tiles
  • Written algorithms
  • Word problems

This resource contains two files that need to be downloaded separately. The first download is the file containing the interactive maze. This is available in either a Microsoft PowerPoint file or a Google Slides file. The second download is a recording sheet for students in an easy-to-print PDF format. This file also contains the answers, so be sure to remove them before distributing them to students!

Gamified Learning = Maximum Student Engagement

As teachers, we know how hard it can be to engage our students in seemingly “dry” topics such as operations with fractions. Here are some of the reasons why your students will love engaging with this digital fractions game:

  • Collaborative Learning – This interactive digital maze can be used as a collaborative activity, encouraging students to work together to solve fractions problems while navigating through the maze.
  • Sustained Attention – Interactive digital resources like mazes capture students’ attention and make learning fun. By incorporating game-like elements, students are more motivated to participate actively in the learning process.
  • Immediate Reward – The potential reward of reaching the end of the maze can be a strong motivating factor for students. Students will be engaged by the prospect of successfully navigating their way through the maze without taking any incorrect routes!
