A set of 15 match-up cards to scaffold work with addition word problems.
Use this activity when nurturing skills in solving addition word problems.
Rather than simply matching answers to worded problems, this match-up activity scaffolds the process. Students find graphic representations to match each problem. The representations include:
- number lines
- tens frames
- addition number sentences.
This problem-solving activity also encourages students to become familiar with frequently used addition words such as ‘altogether’, ‘in total’, ‘in all’ etc.
Because there are 30 puzzle pieces (15 addition problems), this could be used as a whole class activity where each student finds their match-up partner and justifies their reasoning.
Cut the puzzle pieces and adhere them to thick cardboard for durability.
