Help your students identify adverb groups in descriptive writing with this comprehension worksheet.

Explore the Secret Garden — Adverbs Worksheet

Take your students for a wander through a bustling city to discover the sensory delight of an urban garden, with this comprehension activity. Students will first read the passage of text, which is a great example of how adverb phrases add interest and extra information to a piece of writing.

They’ll be challenged to find ten adverb groups within the passage, before answering a total of eleven comprehension questions.

Through this activity students will recognise and identify examples of adverb groups in a completed piece of writing, and become familiar with how they can be used in sentences to add information.

Using this Adverbs Worksheet in Your Classroom

Students will either read the provided piece of narrative text, or you may choose to read it aloud to them to commence the lesson. They will then need to identify the ten adverb groups/phrases within the story, and answer ten further questions relating to the text.

In addition to individual student work time, use this worksheet as a:

  • literacy rotation or guided group
  • lesson exit ticket
  • fast finisher activity
  • homework task
  • whole-class review (via smartboard)
