Measuring Mass: Kilograms and Grams

This set of worksheets has been created by a teacher to help students practise their knowledge of units of measurement when it comes to the mass of an object. In this worksheet, students will focus on kilograms and grams. Having an understanding of everyday objects and what would be the best unit to use to measure the mass of that object helps students to gain a better understanding of the concept of measuring mass. In this set of worksheets students will:

  • Sort everyday objects based on if they should be measured in grams or kilograms.
  • Estimate the weight of objects and circle the most appropriate measurement.
  • Colour objects based on if their measurement would most likely be grams or kilograms.

Hands-On Mass Activities for the Classroom

To go with this set of worksheets,, here are some suggested hands-on mass activities:

  • Sorting objects based on mass activity – have a table of different objects and get students to feel the weight of each object, then they can sort them in order based on their perceived mass.
  • Label the mass unit activity – have labels with different units of mass (grams, kilograms, milligrams) and use pictures of different objects. In small groups time how quickly they can match the correct unit of mass with each object.
  • Measuring mass activity stations – set up stations around the classroom with different types of scales. Have students measure the mass of objects using each type of scales and record their results. As a class, discuss the accuracy of each of the scales.
