An Alphabet Matching Game for Kids

Matching games are an engaging and collaborative teaching tool that enable students to take an active role in their learning. They offer a hands-on, interactive way to reinforce concepts and can be used in multiple ways in the classroom.

This alphabet matching game has been designed by our teacher team to help your students learn all the letters of the alphabet and the most common sound made by each letter. To make a pair, students must match the lowercase letter card to the uppercase letter card. The cards also feature half an object image that starts with that letter sound. The images are completed when the correct cards are matched. Some examples of images are:

  • A ball (letter Bb)
  • A horse (letter Hh)
  • A key (letter Kk)
  • A rainbow (letter Rr)
  • A yo-yo (letter Yy)

Use This Alphabet Matching Game in Your Lessons

Looking for more ways to use this alphabet matching game in your classroom? Here are some suggestions from our teacher team:

  1. Alphabet Scavenger Hunt – Hide the cards around the classroom or outdoor space. Students work in pairs or small groups to find and match the upper and lowercase letters of the alphabet.
  2. Memory Game – Lay all the cards face down in a grid. Students take turns flipping over two cards at a time, trying to remember the locations of the letters. If they find a pair, they remove the cards from the grid.
  3. Home Practice – Send a set of the matching cards home with students so they can play with their families. This extends learning beyond the classroom and helps parents get involved in their child’s education.
