What Is an Array? Maths Definition for Kids
Are you looking for a way to explain arrays to the students in your classroom? Whether this is your first year teaching the fundamentals of multiplication, or perhaps you’ve been away from this year level for a while, let’s check out a quick primer from our Teach Starter team!
An array is one method students can use to determine the answer to a multiplication problem. It involves arranging objects into rows and columns. An array creates a grid-like pattern in either the shape of a rectangle or a square. This multiplication strategy helps students visualise how equal groups can be put together.
Representing Multiplication With Arrays – Maths Puzzles
If you are looking for an activity for your students to understand the relationship between different multiplication representations, you have come to the right place! Teach Starter has created a set of ten 3-piece puzzles for your year 2 and 3 students to use when learning about the concept of multiplication.
To complete these puzzles, print the pages on thick card and laminate for durability. Cut apart each piece and store them in a container or envelope. When students complete a puzzle, they should have three pieces, which should contain the following:
- An array
- A multiplication problem
- A repeated addition sentence
