Explore whether a question is an 'ask now' question 'wait' question with this sorting activity.

Help Children Understand ‘Ask Now’ and ‘Wait’ Questions

While it’s important to encourage children to ask questions, it’s also an important skill to help them determine questions that can wait and questions that need asking straight away. This sorting activity provides several different scenarios and requires students to sort the scenarios under the following headings:

  • Ask for Help
  • Wait to Ask

Some of the scenarios include the following:

  • Jennifer will not stop teasing you on the bus. You have asked her many times to stop.
  • You were so nervous about the maths test today that you forgot your pencil and can’t start the test.
  • You are craving tacos for dinner. You find the meat but don’t know how to use the stove.

Scenarios for Discussion

Using scenarios in the classroom nurtures children’s abilities to analyse and navigate real-life situations effectively. These scenario cards can be used simply as a discussion point for your class. Sit in a circle and read the scenario card to your class and have them express their thoughts, ideas, and opinions about the scenario card.
