Learn about Dr John Walmsley and his conservation work with this 2-page reading passage and accompanying comprehension questions.

Who Is Dr John Walmsley?

John Wamsley is a famous Australian conservationist. He was born in 1938 in South Australia. As a child, he loved exploring the outdoors and watching birds, insects and other animals. This love for nature stayed with him, so he decided to make conservation his life’s work.

In 1969, John bought a piece of land and named it Warrawong Sanctuary. The land was damaged from farming, but John had a vision. He wanted to create a safe place for native animals to live. He planted trees, shrubs and grasses that were native to Australia. He also built fences to keep out predators like foxes and cats. Slowly, the sanctuary became a thriving home for many endangered animals.
