Learn about the Irwin family and their conservation work with this 2-page reading passage and accompanying comprehension questions.

Who Are the Irwin Family?

The Irwin family is famous for their incredible work with animals and nature in Australia. Steve Irwin, known as the ‘Crocodile Hunter’, loved teaching people about wildlife. He was always excited to show how amazing and important animals are. Steve often worked with crocodiles, snakes and other creatures to help people understand and protect them. Sadly, Steve Irwin passed away in September 2006. His wife Terri, father Bob, and children Bindi and Robert, have carried on his conservation efforts and strive to make an impact on both Australia and the Earth as a whole.

Learn About the Irwins During National Science Week 2024

The theme for National Science Week 2024 is “Species Survival – More Than Just Sustainability”. The theme is one that resonates strongly with the work of the Irwin family who strive to conserve habitats and protect endangered species both in Australia and around the world.

This reading passage and comprehension activity have been designed by our teacher team to educate your students about the conservation work of the Irwin family. It explains how the Irwins care for animals at Australia Zoo and how each member of the family embarks on their own passion projects to conserve habitats and wildlife.

After reading the passage, students are then required to answer 10 comprehension questions based on the content in the text. Questions include multiple-choice, true/false and free-response questions.
