Preserve Habitats for Future Generations

Get your students passionate about habitat preservation and species survival with this student-centred research project perfect for National Science Week 2024!

The Scenario

Imagine you are a team of young environmental scientists. Your mission is to choose an Australian habitat area that is in danger and come up with a plan to help protect it. You will learn about the habitat, the threats it faces and what can be done to preserve it for future generations.

The Task

Choose an Australian habitat area. Identify and research threats to the habitat, then develop conservation goals to help protect it. Create a plan of action and explain how it will be monitored and evaluated.

Guiding Questions

  1. Why is the habitat you chose important?
  2. What organisms and resources are in your habitat? Which ones are threatened?
  3. What are some specific goals you want to achieve to help protect this habitat?

Easily Implement This Habitat Preservation Project

(Note: It is recommended that you direct your students to credible, age-appropriate websites to assist them in compiling their research.) The contents of the booklet are as follows:

  1. Project Overview – This page provides students with a detailed explanation of the project. It contains:
    • Scenario Overview
    • Task Outline
    • Guiding Questions
    • Process Walk-Through
  2. Australian Habitats List – This page contains a selection of threatened Australian habitats for the students to research. These include: The Great Barrier Reef, Daintree Rainforest, Tasmanian Wilderness, Kakadu National Park and the Murray-Darling Basin.
  3. Habitat Research Graphic Organisers – These pages enable the students to record their research about their chosen habitat in a clear and organised manner.
  4. Conservation Plan Graphic Organisers –These pages enable students to record their conservation goals for their chosen habitat, as well as their plan for monitoring and evaluating each goal.
  5. Project Reflection – This page contains four questions to help students reflect on the success of the project.
  6. Assessment Rubric – A sample assessment rubric has been provided should teachers wish to assess students’ work according to a given set of criteria.
