Phoneme Blending Activities for the Early Years
As teachers, we know how much our students love digital learning opportunities. But have you ever stopped to think about the advantages for teachers of using digital resources? No printing, no photocopying, no lost worksheets… just download, project, and teach! Brilliant!
This blending and segmenting phonemes resource has been designed to provide your students with opportunities to blend and segment the distinct phonemes in common words. It contains the 7 activity slides that require students to engage with a number of interactive elements.
- Break each word apart into its separate sounds. Type the letters that make those sounds in the boxes.
- Break the work apart into its separate sounds. Drag the picture and sort by how many sounds you hear. (labelled pictures)

Multiple Applications for This Interactive Phonics Activity
The applications of this resource are as diverse as the learners in your class! This versatile phonics resource can be used in your classroom in a variety of ways.
Independent activity
Allow more-confident students to work through the resource independently by assigning the activity in Google classroom. Ensure that the students complete the activity in Edit mode, not in Presentation mode.
Targeted group activity
Work on the resource as a targeted support activity with a group of less-confident learners. While working on each slide, scaffold how to segment each word into its phonemes, then blend together to create words.
Whole-class lesson
Project the presentation onto your interactive whiteboard and work through the slides as a whole-class lesson or review. You might like to provide your students with mini-whiteboards so they can write down the segmented words as they work through the slides.
