Blending CVC Word Activity for Phonemic Awareness

This digital activity helps students develop phonemic awareness by practicing blending sounds in simple CVC words. With bright, engaging images, it captures students’ interest as they work on letter-sound correspondence, decoding, and selecting the correct word or image. This activity strengthens phonics skills and builds reading confidence.

It’s versatile for classroom use: students can work independently, in small groups, or as part of a whole-class warm-up.

How to Teach Blending CVC Words

Teaching budding readers to blend CVC words is an important skill for them to develop. This includes helping students to smoothly combine individual sounds to form words – which assists with them also comprehending what they are reading.

Here’s a suggested sequence of teaching events to help students with this skill.

  1. Introduce the phonemes – students must be familiar with the phonemes of each letter of the alphabet.
  2. Model blending – demonstrate blending CVC words – you could even use this quiz in a whole class environment and have some students also model the blending of these phonemes.
  3. Segment and blend – first break down the words into the individual sounds and then segment to bring the sounds back together to say the whole word.
  4. Practise, practise, practise – use manipulatives, letter tiles, flashcards and printable resources to allow students the opportunity to practise blending phonemes and letters to read words.
