Master Blending with Hands-On Phoneme Blending Activities

These clip cards have been designed to assist students when learning how to blend simple CVC words by using successive blending.

Successive blending helps children blend sounds together when they are learning to read. Successive blending involves blending sounds gradually or successively to make the process easier for early readers.

Here’s how successive blending works:

  1. Start with the first sound, for example in sa… they’ll start by blending the s sound.
  2. Then move to the second sound and blend those two sounds together. S-a makes sa
  3. Add the final sound, /t/ to ‘sa’ to make the full word – sat!

How to Use these Task Cards in the Classroom

Once you’ve printed the resource – it’s recommended you print on thick card or laminate it for durability. Particularly as your students will be using pegs on and off these task cards.

You may like to pop a star on the back to show the correct answer for students to self correct their work. Students will need a handful of pegs with the task cards to complete the task.

The best thing about these task cards is that they are versatile and can be used individually or in small group activities.
