Blend & Win: CVC Word Quiz Challenge!

This fun and engaging digital quiz activity has been designed by an early years teacher to assist in the practise of blending simple phonemes into words. On each slide, students click the dots and then blend the 3 phonemes together to say the word and pick the correct image that matches the word.

This digital activity can be used as an individual check in, or as a whole class activity.

How to Teach Blending CVC Words

Teaching budding readers to blend CVC words is an important skill for them to develop. This includes helping students to smoothly combine individual sounds to form words – which assists with them also comprehending what they are reading.

Here’s a suggested sequence of teaching events to help students with this skill.

  1. Introduce the phonemes – students must be familiar with the phonemes of each letter of the alphabet.
  2. Model blending – demonstrate blending CVC words – you could even use this quiz in a whole class environment and have some students also model the blending of these phonemes.
  3. Segment and blend – first break down the words into the individual sounds and then segment to bring the sounds back together to say the whole word.
  4. Practise, practise, practise – use manipulatives, letter tiles, flashcards and printable resources to allow students the opportunity to practise blending phonemes and letters to read words.
