Blend It to Win It: Levelled Phoneme Blending Game Boards
This set of fun and engaging printable game boards has been designed by a teacher to provide students with opportunities to practise blending 2-phoneme, 3-phoneme, and 4-phoneme words. In these phoneme blending games, students roll a die and choose a word from the corresponding column to blend and read. If they read the word correctly, they get to cover it. The game ends when all the words have been read and covered.
You can differentiate this game by providing students with the simpler CVC 3-phoneme word game board or the more challenging 2-phoneme board that includes digraphs. Additionally, you can have students aim to fill only one column rather than the entire board for a more targeted practice experience.
How to Teach Blending Words
Teaching budding readers to blend CVC words is an important skill for them to develop. This includes helping students to smoothly combine individual sounds to form words – which assists with them also comprehending what they are reading.
Here’s a suggested sequence of teaching events to help students with this skill.
- Introduce the phonemes – students must be familiar with the phonemes of each letter of the alphabet.
- Model blending – demonstrate blending CVC words – you could even use this quiz in a whole class environment and have some students also model the blending of these phonemes.
- Segment and blend – first break down the words into the individual sounds and then segment to bring the sounds back together to say the whole word.
- Practise, practise, practise – use manipulatives, letter tiles, flashcards and printable resources to allow students the opportunity to practise blending phonemes and letters to read words.
