Set Sail with STEM Engineering Projects! Design and Build a Pirate Ship

Ahoy, mateys! ⚓ A legendary pirate captain has a mission for your class. She needs a seaworthy vessel that can carry her treasure and sail the seven seas. But beware—her demands are high, and the stakes are even higher. Can your students rise to the challenge and prove their engineering skills?

With this printable STEM Science Project resource pack, your Year 3 and 4 students will dive into design and engineering concepts through an exciting, hands-on activity. They’ll use problem-solving, creativity, and teamwork to construct a pirate ship that can float while holding a cargo of coins.

What’s Included in This Printable STEM Engineering Project?

This resource pack is complete with a two-page STEM engineering project template to guide your students through the engineering design process. It provides an organized way for students to record information as they:

  •  Identify the problem and challenges.
  • Brainstorm ideas and choose the best one to build.
  • Create a materials list and draw labelled diagrams of the ship design.
  • Follow the plan and construct a model ship.
  • Evaluate the ship’s performance. Does it float? Can it hold the coins?
  • Analyse what worked and what didn’t, and make adjustments for success.
