Decode words with OA, OW, OE and EY long vowel teams by crafting cute desserts!

Here’s the Scoop… Vowel Teams Can Be Super Sweet!

Sweeten your students to learning about vowel teams with this engaging literacy activity that’s sure to please!

Use this resource as an English group activity or whole-class exercise to practise identifying vowel teams within words.

To build sundaes with vowel teams, students choose a sundae piece. They must read the word and identify the vowel team contained within the word. Students find the matching vowel team on the word mat and cover the matching piece of the sundae. Students continue choosing and matching pieces until all of the sundaes are complete!

The vowel teams students will identify through this activity are:

  • oa
  • ow
  • oe
  • ey

Scaffolding and Extension Tips

  • Challenge fast finishers to put the words from the sundae pieces in alphabetical order.
  • Simplify the task for students who may be overwhelmed working with four sundaes at once by choosing only one vowel team to work with at a time.
