How to Make Paper Lanterns: Simple Lunar New Year Crafts for Kids

Paper lanterns play a key role in many traditional festivals and are a cherished part of Chinese celebrations due to their rich cultural and symbolic meanings. The practise of crafting a Chinese paper lantern has been a beloved tradition in Chinese culture for generations and continues to be an iconic feature of festivities like Chinese New Year.

Here’s how to create your own paper lantern to celebrate the Year of the Snake:

  1. Colour the lantern and handle if desired. (FUN FACT: Red is a popular colour for a Chinese paper lantern as it symbolises positive energy, happiness and good fortune.)
  2. Cut out the lantern along the solid lines.
  3. Fold the lantern in half along the longer (horizontal) axis.
  4. Carefully cut along the dotted lines, stopping at the end of each line without cutting all the way through.
  5. Unfold the paper, keeping the coloured side on the outside. Curl the lantern into a circular shape and glue the ends together.
  6. Cut out the paper strip included in the template and use a stapler to attach it as a handle for your lantern.
