Use this “A Visit from Santa” Christmas poem for kids as a basis for some festive fun in your classroom!

A Christmas Poem for Kids

I was tucked in bed pretending to sleep,
When I heard the pitter-patter of reindeer feet.
Through the chimney Father Christmas came,
And checked his list for my name.

If you’re looking for a short and fun Christmas poem to use in your classroom this festive season, you can’t go past “A Visit From Santa”. This simple and very sweet three-verse poem tells the story of a child who is fortunate enough to have a personal encounter with Santa on Christmas Eve. Not only will your students learn about some of the key elements of poetry when engaging with this text, but they will also enhance their phonological awareness as they listen to rhyming pairs such as sleep/feet, tree/me and boy/joy.

This poster displays the complete poem in a child-friendly font, making it accessible for early readers to follow along.

Fun Activities to Accompany This Children’s Christmas Poem

Once your students have read the poem, there are multiple ways for you to extend their engagement with the content. Here are some ideas you might like to consider:

  1. Design a Santa Trap – Inspired by the idea of Santa visiting, have students brainstorm and design their own Santa traps. Students can draw their designs or build models using craft supplies.
  2. Santa’s Footprint Craft Activity – Recreate the magic of Santa’s visit by having students make Santa footprints. Use card to cut out footprints and let students decorate them with glitter, cotton balls or other materials to mimic snow.
  3. Snacks for Santa – Have students prepare simple snacks that could be left out for Santa’s visit, such as cookies or hot chocolate. This activity would integrate perfectly with a lesson on procedure texts!
