Who Was Wassily Kandinsky? Dot Day Inspiration

Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944) was a groundbreaking Russian painter and art theorist widely recognised as one of the pioneers of abstract art. He was not a fan of traditional art and preferred exploring the realm of abstraction to evoke emotions and spirituality in his works.

Kandinsky’s art was a game-changer in the art world. He focused on the combination of colours, shapes, and forms, which resulted in beautiful artworks that went beyond what people were used to seeing. He was particularly fascinated with circles, which he saw as symbols of unity, infinity, and the cyclical nature of life.

One of his most famous paintings, shown below, is titled “Squares with Concentric Circles.”  This painting and many other of Kandisnksy’s geometrically inspired artworks serve as excellent jumping-off points for your Dot Day Activities!

Kick Off Dot Day and Create Kandinsky Circle Art!

This activity is designed to introduce your students to abstract art through a game of SCOOT! Using the enclosed cards (30 total), students will rotate around the classroom, adding one visual element at a time to their artwork. Each part is displayed on a task card, and students will copy that image somewhere into their masterpiece.

Once all cards have been visited and all elements have been drawn, encourage students to add bright colours and patterns to make their circle art stand out.
