Practise Geometric Reasoning With Our Classifying Shapes Activity

This classifying shapes activity is a fun and interactive way to deepen students’ understanding of geometry. This number talk task card set includes 20 cards, each showcasing a different collection of shapes for students to explore and classify. Each card features thought-provoking questions on the back, such as “What are three different ways to sort these shapes?” and “Which figures have both parallel and perpendicular lines?”

These engaging tasks encourage students to analyse, discuss and connect shape attributes, making them perfect for group activities or classroom discussions. A great resource for building shape classification and reasoning skills!

Using Our Classifying 2D Shapes Number Talk Cards

These classifying 2D shapes cards have many uses! Here are a few ideas to get your students chatting. 

  • Whole Group – Display one of the cards to your class during a maths lesson. Ask students some of the questions printed on the back to begin a classroom discussion. 
  • Guided Groups – Present a card to your guided maths group to spark discussion about the attributes of the shapes they observe. 
  • ‘Scoot’ Activity – Place the classifying shapes activity cards randomly around the room. Partner students and have the pairs rotate from card to card, discussing how they might group the shapes they see.
