Comparing Decimals Worksheet

Are your Year 4 students learning how to compare decimals? In order to compare decimals, you first need to line up the decimal points and then compare the digits one by one, starting from the first digit to the right of the decimal point. If a digit in one decimal is larger than the corresponding digit in the other decimal, then the decimal with the larger digit is greater. If all the digits are the same, then the decimals are equal. For example:

  • 0.5 is less than 0.8 because 5 is less than 8.
  • 1.2 is greater than 1.19 because 2 is greater than 1.
  • 1.00 is equal to 1.0 because all digits are the same.

Teach Starter has created a colour-by-number worksheet where students will answer 15 questions where they must compare decimals and colour the answer according to the key in each box. Most of the numbers on this worksheet include decimals to the tenths or hundredths place. After colouring in the spaces on the worksheet, students will create a beautiful stained-glass picture!

An answer key is included with your download to make marking fast and easy!

Multiple Uses for This Comparing Decimals Worksheet

In addition to independent student work time, use this worksheet as an activity for:

  • Guided maths groups
  • Lesson wrap-up
  • Early finishers
  • Homework assignment

If students would like an additional challenge, encourage them to create an addition or subtraction equation to equal 10 of the numbers from the grid.

For students who need additional support, encourage them to reference an anchor chart or poster reminding them of the rounding rules and place value positions.
