Shading In Fractions for Understanding

By shading in fractions to create an area model, students solidify their understanding of what each fractional amount represents. This is the first step in moving their understanding from concrete to more abstract.

Once students learn to represent fractions with area models like those in this worksheet set, they can use this skill for many other fraction tasks, such as adding, subtracting and converting. Make sure to work models into your fractions lessons as much as possible!
