What are Compound Words? Why Do We Teach Them?

Compound words are made of two or more words that are joined together. They’re a great way to build confidence and improve vocabulary, which is why they’re used so often in early literacy activities.

In most compound word exercises and assessments, the compound word has one word that is a common or known word. Having a decodable portion of the word helps students begin spelling the correct compound word, which in turn helps them learn to spell longer, more complex words.

Knowing how to spell part of the compound word also builds confidence in their spelling abilities!

Print or Make a List of Compound Words

Compound words are fun! They’re like connect-the-dots for your brain. You’re connecting two words to make a new one, and you get a sense of accomplishment when you do it. And that feeling is great for kids—they love compound words! This is why we recommend sitting down with your students and beginning your study of compound words with a simple discussion. Create a compound word anchor chart together, and let your students show you what they already know. Then move into additional word study and practice with the concepts. You could also throw in a compound word game or two for fun!
