Let’s Climb to The Top of Our Ck Digraph Understanding

Teaching young readers the ‘ck’ digraph is all about explaining that the letters ‘c’ and ‘k’ can work together to make the /k/ sound, like in words such as “duck,” “sock,” and “back.”

This fun rock climbing-themed interactive activity has been created by an experienced teacher with little learners at the forefront of the design. The activities students will complete include:

  1. Look at pictures, decide if the object contains the ‘ck’ sound, and use a tick or a cross to show their understanding.
  2. Sorting words into a ‘ck’ list and a ‘not ck’ list.
  3. Type in the correct word in for a set of four pictures, including – sock, lick, stack, and dock.
  4. Read a simple sentence that contains a word with the ‘ck’ digraph and match an image to each sentence.
  5. Sorting real and nonsense words that include the ‘ck’ digraph.
  6. Look at pictures and decide which word matches the image. x 4.
  7. Finding ‘ck’ digraph in a small paragraph of writing.
  8. Plus more!

Other Ways to Practise the ‘Ck’ Digraph

Practising the “ck” digraph in the classroom can be fun and educational. Here are various activities and exercises that kids can enjoy to reinforce their understanding of the “ck” digraph:

  • Word Hunt: Have a word hunt where students search for words containing the “ck” digraph in books, posters, or other classroom materials. They can circle or highlight the words they find.
  • Writing Practice: Provide opportunities for students to practice writing “ck” words. They can write the words on individual whiteboards, notebooks, or chalkboards.
  • Playdough Creations: Use playdough to create letters and build “ck” words. This tactile activity engages students in a hands-on way.
  • Build-a-Word Station: Set up a station with letter tiles or magnetic letters. Students can use these to build “ck” words, reinforcing the connection between letters and sounds.
  • Sensory Bin: Fill a sensory bin with small objects or cards that have “ck” words written on them. Students can dig through the bin to find and say the words.
