Explore Consonant Digraphs with This Drag-and-Drop Activity

Once students have mastered single letter-sound correspondences, it is time to move on to digraphs – two-letter combinations that create one sound. 

This interactive activity explores some of the most common consonant digraphs students will encounter when reading and writing: wh, ng, sh, ck, th, ph and ch. 

There are two sections to this interactive resource.

The first set of 7 slides requires students to look at a set of pictures, saying the name of each picture aloud. Students listen for the digraph sound in each word, then drag and drop the images into the correct digraph category.

The second set of 14 slides requires students to look at a set of pictures, saying the name of each picture aloud. Students listen for the focus digraph, then drag and drop the words containing that digraph into the spaces provided.

There are 21 examples for students to work through. An answer key is provided.

This versatile resource can be used in your classroom in various ways.

For individual student work, assign the activity to your students in Google classroom. Ensure that the students complete the activity in Edit mode, not Presentation mode.

Alternatively, project the presentation onto your interactive whiteboard and work through the presentation as a whole-class lesson or review.
