Karate Kick Those Letters to Create Contractions

These visually appealing contraction classroom posters have a cute theme of Karate as students think about the letters they are going to ‘kick’ to the curb to create a contraction. Each poster features a dynamic karate illustration, reminding students to channel their inner linguistic warrior as they tackle those tricky contractions.

These posters serve as a powerful visual aide in the classroom, reinforcing the concept of contractions in an engaging way. Whether it’s “can’t,” “won’t,” or “isn’t,” students will be empowered to karate chop those unnecessary letters and streamline their writing with ease.

Contraction Activity Ideas

Here are a list of easy activity ideas to help your students practise their knowledge of contractions:

  • Contraction Match-Up: Create pairs of cards, each containing a word and its corresponding contraction (e.g., “cannot” and “can’t”). Mix them up and have kids match the words with their contractions.
  • Contraction Bingo: Call out the full words, and kids mark the corresponding contractions on their cards.
  • Contraction Puzzles: Write contractions on one set of puzzle pieces and the corresponding full words on another set. Kids match the contractions with their full-word counterparts to complete the puzzles.
  • Contraction Relay Race: Divide kids into teams and create a relay race where they have to run to a board, find a word, and write its contraction before running back and tagging the next team member.
  • Contraction Scavenger Hunt: Hide cards around the classroom or outdoor space, each containing either a contraction or its full words. Kids search for the cards and match the contractions with their full-word counterparts.
  • Contraction Charades: Write contractions on slips of paper and have kids act out the words without speaking while their classmates guess the contraction.
  • Contraction Tic-Tac-Toe: Create a tic-tac-toe grid with contractions written in each square. Kids take turns choosing a square and saying the full word to claim it for their team.
  • Contraction Flashcards: Make flashcards with contractions on one side and their full-word counterparts on the other. Kids can quiz each other or use them for independent practice.
