Practise counting to 10 with various representations with this cookie sorting activity.
Bite-Sized Counting Fun – Sorting Numbers on Cookies
This super cute sorting activity has been created by a teacher and is a great way for students to show their counting skills up to 10. Each cookie shows numerals, tally marks, numbers on dice and finger counting images and students need to sort them onto their correct cookie trays.
Sorting cookies by different representations of numbers helps students make connections between various ways of expressing quantities. This activity reinforces the understanding that numbers can be represented in multiple formats, which is essential for developing a flexible and comprehensive number sense.
Classroom Activities Using this Sorting Activity
There are a number of different ways you can use this fun cookie sorting activity in the classroom, here are just a few suggestions:
- Cooking sorting race – Divide students into teams and see who can correctly sort the cookies onto the trays the fastest. This encourages teamwork and quick thinking.
- Number match-up – scatter the cookie card around the room. Students must find a cookie, identify the number on it, and place it on the correct tray. This combines physical activity with number recognition.
- Number Hunt – hide the cookie cards around the classroom. Give students clues to find them. Once found, they must place the cookie on the correct tray. This combines a treasure hunt with number recognition.
- Matching Pairs – have students find pairs of cookies that represent the same number but in different formats (e.g., a numeral 4 and a tally mark 4). They then place these pairs on the corresponding tray.
- Group Sorting Challenge – in small groups, students take turns picking a cookie, identifying its number, and explaining why it goes on a particular tray. This promotes verbalising thought processes and collaborative learning.
