Practise the counting-on strategy with this fun cover-the-board game.
Counting On Maths Game
This maths game is a perfect addition to your maths group rotations. Students pick two cards and use the counting-on strategy to find the total. Once they have the total, they cover the number on the board with a token.
There are number lines from 0–20 included in the resource to assist students with choosing the larger number in the pair they choose and then counting on from that number to find the total.
Through this activity, students will show their understanding of the counting-on addition strategy and their ability to add numbers to 20.
Tips for Differentiation + Scaffolding
A team of dedicated, experienced educators created this resource to support your maths lessons.
If you have a mixture of above and below-level learners, check out these suggestions for keeping students on track with the concepts:
🆘 Support Struggling Students
Give students concrete materials that they can use to recreate the numbers, determine the larger amount and then count on using one-to-one correspondence.
➕ Challenge Fast Finishers
Have students who need an extra challenge visualise how they arrived at their answers. Showing whether they used a number line, counted in their head or used their fingers.
