Embed Counting Phonemes Activities in Your Daily Phonics Instruction

The ability to isolate and identify the distinct sounds in words is a key requirement of phonemic awareness. So why not embed activities that immerse your students in the sounds of our language into your daily phonics practice?

We’ve got a simple yet effective interactive resource to help your students fine-tune their listening skills as they identify and count the distinct sounds in a selection of common words.

Read on, and we’ll explain how it works!

Using Technology to Put Students in the Driver’s Seat

This interactive phonics resource includes 10 activity slides. Each slide contains a picture representing a common word and multiple choice options to choose from. Students complete the activities as follows:

  1. Look at the picture on the slide, then count how many sounds (phonemes) are in the word.
  2. Click on the lolly at the bottom of the slide that contains the correct number of phonemes.
  3. If correct, the activity will continue to the next task. If incorrect, the activity will return back and enable students to try again.

Be sure to have Presentation mode enabled when interacting with this resource to allow all the interactions/links to operate correctly.

Tips for Extension and Scaffolding

A team of dedicated, experienced educators created this resource to support your phonics instruction. It can be used for small groups, whole-class learning or independent practice.

If you have a mixture of above and below-level learners, check out these suggestions for keeping students on track with the concepts:

🆘 Support Struggling Students

Provide students with concrete manipulatives, such as counters or buttons, to act as physical representations of the phonemes in each word. Allow students to physically represent the phonemes in each word with their counters before making their selection.

Challenge Fast Finishers

For students needing a challenge, encourage them to try encoding (spelling) the words represented on the slides as they move through each activity. This could be done on mini-whiteboards to enable the teacher to monitor their accuracy.

No Preparation… Just Download and Go!
