Bring Laughter Into Your Classroom with a Silly Story!

Let’s face it… the modern classroom is a pretty serious place most of the time! With so much content to cover in so little time, it’s no wonder that we sometimes forget to stop and have a little fun with our students!

If you’re looking for ways to cover the curriculum AND have a laugh with your class, you’ve come to the right place! This literacy resource has been designed to teach your students about the narrative elements of character, setting, problem and solution while simultaneously having a bit of well-deserved fun!

This resource puts your students in the driver’s seat as they use character, setting, problem and solution cards to create a silly story. The resource download contains the following:

  • 4 x sort headings (characters, setting, problem, solution)
  • 48 sort cards

How To Create a Silly Story Using This Resource

Follow the simple instructions below and your students will be making their own silly stories in no time!

  1. Print, cut out and laminate the sort headings and sort cards.
  2. Place the sort headings on a flat surface.
  3. Review the definition of each story element.
  4. Hold up each sort card and have the students place it under the correct heading (setting, character, problem or solution).
  5. Students use one card from each category to create a silly story and write it on the recording sheet provided.
  6. Have your students share their silly stories with the class.

Do It Your Way… Multiple Options for Applying This Resource

This versatile resource can be used in a variety of ways to support your teaching of narrative elements. You might like to use it in the following ways:

  • Teacher-directed whole-class activity
  • Student-directed small-group activity
  • Independent activity (for more-confident students)
