An Endangered Species World Map for Your Classroom

Did you know that there are approximately 10 000 animal species on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Critically Endangered list?

This world map shows animal species (and some subspecies) that the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has categorised as Critically Endangered (CR). These
animals face a very high risk of going extinct in the wild. Sadly, there are even more CR species that would not fit on this map!

Some of the Critically Endangered species included on this map include:

  • Southern bluefin tuna
  • Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle
  • Eskimo curlew
  • Amur leopard
  • Riverine rabbit
  • And (sadly) many more!

Create an Endangered Species Classroom Display

This map makes the perfect centrepiece for a classroom display about critically endangered species, which all would agree is a very important topic to educate our students about!

Enlarge the map to A3 size or larger, then place it on your classroom bulletin board.

Students could research one of the critically endangered animals in pairs or small groups, then display their information around the map. Alternatively, Teach Starter has created a set of fact cards about each animal that would make a perfect accompaniment to the map.

By using this poster and these activities, students will gain a deeper understanding of endangered species, the importance of conservation and what they can do to help protect our planet’s incredible wildlife!
