Drive Into Blending: CVC Word Road Mats
These blending road mats, designed by an experienced teacher, provide an engaging way for students to practise blending simple CVC words in the classroom. Using toy cars, students can slowly “drive” along the road while blending the individual phonemes to form complete words.
The resource includes two sets of mats:
- Image-only mats: Designed to focus solely on phonemic awareness, these mats encourage students to blend sounds without the distraction of letters, reinforcing their ability to hear and manipulate phonemes.
- Letter-based mats: For students ready to apply their knowledge of letter-sound correspondences, these mats incorporate letters, allowing students to blend phonemes while also practicing their decoding skills.
Phonemic Awareness Focus
This resource emphasises the auditory skill of blending sounds. To maintain this focus, it is recommended to use the image-only mats first before progressing to the letter-based version, ensuring students build a strong foundation in phonemic awareness.
