Help students blend CVC words by using the successive blending technique with this set of easy to use phoneme blending task cards.

Step-by-Step Sound Builders: Successive Blending Task Cards

These visually simple successive blending task cards have been created by a teacher to assist students with the successive blending technique. This is particularly helpful for children who may be finding the process of blending phonemes difficult. Each task card includes a picture and a CVC word (each letter in a box to begin with), then students are encouraged to blend the first two sounds together and say the last sound separately – eventually blending all three phonemes together. Breaking the blending process like this makes it feel less overwhelming for early readers. 

Here’s how successive blending works:

  1. Start with the first sound, for example in sa… they’ll start by blending the s sound.
  2. Then move to the second sound and blend those two sounds together. S-a makes sa
  3. Add the final sound, /t/ to ‘sa’ to make the full word – sat!

Using Blending Task Cards in the Classroom

This versatile resource can be used in a variety of ways in the classroom based on what your class may need. Here are some suggestions from our resident Early Years Teacher:

  • Use in a small group environment where students work together, taking turns blending the sounds and reading the words.
  • Check in activity – Have the task cards displayed at the door of the classroom and get students to pick a word to blend together as they come in for the morning or after a break.
  • Model how to blend each of the words together by displaying it on the interactive whiteboard for a whole class practice experience. 
  • Homework practice – send a few task cards home for students who may need a little extra practise with blending CVC words.
