Engage Students with a Digital Subject-Verb Agreement Activity

Understanding subject-verb agreement (irregular verbs) can be challenging for students, but this digital resource makes learning fun and interactive!

Designed for primary school teachers and students, this activity clearly explains how subject-verb agreement works with some of the most common irregular verbs. After learning the rules for each verb, students test their understanding with three hands-on drag-and-drop exercises, where they must select the correct version of the verb to complete the sentences.

The following irregular verbs are included in this digital activity:

  • Was and Were
  • Are and Is
  • Has and Have
  • Do and Does

This digital resource for subject-verb agreement with irregular verbs downloads as an editable Google Slides file.

How to Use This Subject-Verb Agreement Activity in Your Classroom

When using this subject-verb agreement resource for direct teaching, follow these steps:

  1. Introduce the Concept – Display and read the introductory slide for the first irregular verb (was/were).
  2. Guided Practice – Work through the first two drag-and-drop activities as a class, encouraging students to discuss their reasoning before selecting an answer.
  3. Independent Practice – Have students complete the third drag-and-drop activity individually or in pairs to see how well they have grasped the concept.
  4. Review and Reflect – Go over the answers to the third activity as a class, addressing any misconceptions and summarising the key subject-verb agreement rules.
  5. Repeat for the Other Verbs – Repeat the process for the other irregular verbs in the resource (are/is, has/have, do/does).
