A Set of Year 2 Editing Passages

Editing practice is an essential way to build students’ foundational language skills. It promotes careful attention to detail and reinforces key aspects of sentence structure, spelling, punctuation and grammar.

This set of Year 2 editing passages has been designed to help your students strengthen these key skills through engaging, age-appropriate practice. The resource includes 20 short editing passages, each written about familiar topics that make grammar practice more relevant. Carefully and deliberately levelled for Year 2 students, each passage provides a comfortable reading experience while supporting core language development.

The language skills addressed in this set of editing passages include:

  • Spelling
  • Capital letters
  • Full stops
  • Question marks
  • Exclamation marks

Year 2 Editing Passages: What to Expect

Each slide contains a short passage, an image and a set of instructions. The instructions inform students of the mistakes they need to find and fix within the passage.

Following each slide is an answer slide where all of the required changes are highlighted in a different colour from the rest of the text.

This versatile slide deck can be used in multiple ways to support your teaching objectives.

  • Whole-Class Activity – Display an editing passage as a class exercise. Read through it together, encouraging students to identify and correct the errors as a group.
  • Small Group Work – Use the passages in targeted small groups, where students can work together or receive guided support to find and correct mistakes.
  • Independent Practice – Assign particular passages for students to edit on their own, giving them the chance to practise at a comfortable pace.

We do one of these passages each morning. The children copy it onto their individual whiteboards editing as they go. They have gotten so much better over this semester. Even my students with learning difficulties are able to identify errors with capitals and fullstops.
