Why Teach Equivalent Fractions Using Visual Models?

Teaching equivalent fractions with visual models is crucial for Year 4 students just beginning to grasp this abstract concept. Visual models, such as fraction strips or fraction charts, help students see that different fractions can represent the same quantity, which can be difficult when only numbers are used. Using these visual models also allows your students to manipulate and explore fractions hands-on, which helps with their comprehension and retention of the skill.

Engage Students in Learning Equivalent Fractions

Equivalent fraction practise doesn’t always have to be boring! Why not engage your students with a fun camping-themed board game to help them master the concept of equivalent fractions using fraction strips and a fraction chart? This educational resource, created by our team of teachers, is perfect for any classroom. It combines learning with play to enhance your students’ understanding of fractions in a fun and engaging way.

How to Play:

  1. Roll the Number Cube: Players take turns rolling a number cube and moving forward the corresponding number of spaces on the game board.
  2. Follow the Directions: When a player lands on a space, they read and follow the directions. These directions may involve moving additional spaces, skipping turns, or other actions that keep the game fun and unpredictable.
  3. Solve Fraction Problems: If a player lands on a camping picture, they draw a card and solve the equivalent fraction problem using fraction strips or a fraction chart.
  4. Race to the Finish Line: The first player to reach the finish line wins the game!
