Escape From the Alien Invasion – Maths Escape Room

Oh no!

Strange things have started happening here on Earth. Your class just got word from Astronaut Headquarters that they are in the middle of an alien invasion! In order to defeat the aliens and save Earth, the astronauts need your students’ help!

Year 3 Fractions Activity

This escape room makes for an ideal rainy day activity, a fun maths activity, and a review of fraction models, comparing fractions, determining equivalent fractions, and more! Divide students into pairs or teams and provide each with a guidebook. Each guidebook contains six missions that reveal numbers, symbols and codes to help your students determine the correct number sequence to unlock the escape code.

Whatever the reason you incorporate it in your lesson, students will use teamwork and problem-solving skills to develop their understanding of basic fractions.

Scaffolding + Extension Tips

Scaffold the activity for your students by

  • Reading the introduction and discussing the mission prior to beginning.
  • Put students in teams of 3-4 students, ensuring that you have a student that can assist others during the activity.
  • Allow students to use a fractions anchor chart as a reference during the game.
