Practise Estimating – Multiplication Style!

Estimation is an important maths skill that students will use for years to come. They learn to estimate how much something would cost or the approximate amount of material they need for a project. After students have a solid understanding of how to round, they can use this skill to estimate products of whole numbers by rounding each factor to the nearest ten, hundred, thousand and so on.

Teach Starter has created a matching game to help your students refine their understanding of how to estimate with multiplication problems. This teacher-created resource comes with an instructions page, 36 playing cards, a recording sheet and an answer key.

How To Use Our Maths Matching Game

To use this matching game, first print and cut out the pieces to the game. Consider keeping them in an envelope for easy storage. After preparing the cards, give each group a set of matching cards and a recording sheet. Students can either play the game traditional ‘Memory’ style, or they can keep the cards face up.

Students must work to create a 3-piece match containing an equation, rounded equation and estimated product. Once students have found the 12 matches, they can write their answers on their recording sheet to turn in.
