Order of Operations – Maths Practise

Understanding how to apply the order of operations can be a tricky concept for students. Not only do they need to have a strong computational foundation, but they also need to remember the proper order when multiple mathematical symbols and operations are used. Teach Starter has created a cut-and-paste activity that will help your students strengthen these skills while working to decode a mystery phrase.

With this printable worksheet, students will evaluate 23 different expressions using the order of operations. After solving, students will find the corresponding answer on the 2nd page and glue the piece on top of the number. Once the pieces are in the correct location, a mystery message will be revealed.

An answer key is included with your download to make grading fast and easy!

For students that need an additional challenge, consider using the editable version to include negative numbers.

If students need support with this activity, encourage them to complete the worksheet with a peer or a teacher’s help. Additionally, students can use an order of operations chart and/or coloured pencils to underline the different sections of the equation they should solve first.
