A Graphic Organiser for Fact and Opinion
Understanding the difference between facts and opinions is an important skill for critical thinking and effective communication. Our teacher team designed this graphic organiser to help students practise distinguishing between the two. Students select three topics of their choice and record one fact and one opinion about each.
By completing this activity, students will develop their ability to identify factual information and recognise personal viewpoints, strengthening their reasoning and writing skills.
Multiple Uses for This Fact and Opinion Graphic Organiser
This graphic organiser for fact and opinion writing can be used in a variety of different ways in your English lessons. Here are some suggestions from our teacher team:
- Teacher Instruction – Use the fact and opinion graphic organiser as a whole-class activity by projecting a copy on your interactive whiteboard. Write a topic and have students generate a fact and an opinion about the topic in their journals or on a mini dry erase board. Then, choose students to come to the board to write their responses.
- Rotation Activity – Place copies of the fact and opinion graphic organiser in at a group rotation station. You might like to place the worksheets inside dry erase sleeves so they can be used, wiped clean, then reused by the next group of students.
- Text-Based Activity – Using different authentic texts, have students identify a fact and an opinion from the text and write them down on a copy of the graphic organiser. This can be done as a whole-class, small-group or independent activity.
